Tumble Dryer Energy Saving Tips

Tumble Dryer Energy Saving Tips

Thankfully, the beginning of Autumn has brought some mild sunny weather and we can still harness the free energy of the sun and wind to dry our washing on the line.  Inevitably, with the days getting shorter and weather turning cooler, getting a load of washing fresh and dry will be tricky.

Using a tumble dryer doesn't have to cost the earth, or your pocket.  We've got a few tips that will help you to keep your clothes in tip top condition and drive your energy costs down:

  • Spin the clothes well in the washing machine by choosing the correct wash program or re-spinning at the end of the cycle to get as much moisture out as possible before you use the dryer.
  • Loosen and untangle the washing as you bring it out of the washing machine as this ensures the clothes are separated in the dryer allowing more air flow whilst drying.
  • Sort your garments by material type ie cottons, synthetics as this will help them dry at the same time. A pair of jeans will take a lot longer to dry than a blouse.
  • Do not overfill your dryer drum as your clothes will take much longer to dry using more energy and potentially damaging the clothes.
  • Try out the Dryer eggs/balls that we have in stock as this will reduce drying time by up to 25%. These help to separate the clothes allowing more air to circulate so drying is quicker using less energy. They are great and eliminate softener (great for sensitive skins) and reduce creasing ( a must for those that hate ironing).
  • Don’t ever add more wet garments once you have started the drying process as this will slow the whole process down again.
  • CLEAN the fluff filter every time as fluff accumulating reduces air flow.
  • If you have a Vented dryer keep your vent pipe clean and check its not nipped preventing air flow.
  • If you have a condenser dryer there will be a flap with a metal condenser unit behind it which you can remove and clean. Fluff will accumulate there causing higher energy use and neglect could be a fire hazzard.
  •  If you have a condenser or sensor tumble dryer you will need to position somewhere at room temperature as heating the cold metal will definitely cost you more and may prevent the dryer from working.
